Bundle of Joy

Let me tell you about a new addition to the family. The treasures and I are the proud owners of our own little baby rabbit, Jiffy. She is a teensy-weensy black bunny, bought from the shop where we found our lovely cat, Mme Bovary. Poor Mme B is now in high dudgeon, failing to understand why she is being upstaged by a creature she regards as little more than a snack. But who could resist the downy-soft fur of a ten week old rablet?

Quite a few people, apparently. Linda, the petshop owner, said that all Jiffy's brothers and sisters were snapped up long before her - because she is black. Honestly! Discrimination, in Forest Hill of all places. We are all shocked, and mightily protective of dear Jiffy as a result.

We are now on Day Two of rabbit ownership, and already I see the parallels with an insane love affair, not unlike mine with TL. Yesterday we were struck with love-at-first-sight, then our love was rapturously returned as Jiffy snuggled happily in our arms. Now Jiffy is showing the first signs of rebellion. We've had a bit of scratching, excused as she can hardly help having long toenails, can she? And then, 50-odd hours into the relationship, the first definite cracks - she has bitten Child Two.

Already, I am tempted to scurry to the Internet to look up the lifespan of Netherlands dwarf rabbits. For that is the other thing about Jiffy - she is a purebred pedigree bunny. Another highly-strung female in the house, as TL would no doubt say. And she cost £35! Or the price of a full trolley at Lidl! This is a fact that the petshop owner failed to reveal until both the children had had a go at holding her, of course. Sigh. Mme Bovary may have a point.

Don't they bite in error when they mistake you for food ? Thus washing the hands before handling ie making sure one does not smell of carrrots etc is perhaps a good thing ? thats what my friend says anyway , she learned this via her baby hamster who was always making this mistake .... I would feed baby first then when fed , wash hands then handle ? I'm pulling a bit of a face here as really I have no clue . Good Luck .

PS That run thing looks swish .. have you seen those fab Dutch bungalow affairs too ? Do we get to see a pic of the main residence for Bunny ? I must admit a fascination for such things , even if its not painted natural hessian , which of course it may well be . Go on , just a quick snap its easier than the full story of round one with TL which we are all secretly gagging for though completely understanding of your reticence about embarking on . Utterly tedious to have to revisit I'm sure .

Now, I know you share my passion for chocolate peanuts, so make sure from now on that you don't pick up any stray ones off the floor, but only take those from a labelled bag!! Ignore this advice at your peril.

I'm not much of a buff when it comes to rabbits except there are millions of the wild ones around here. Sometimes we wake up to see at least two nibbling at our lawn. I have a German question for you over at mine!

Goodbye, thanks, she is super-adorable, Ms Catcalls, will have a go, thank you, and she was actually plonked in the top part of the late hamster's cage for her photocall, she does have her own deluxe hutch, however, and I will try and get a photo of it, Potty, you're so right, lovely to have a pet who doesn't clash with the cat and wouldn't she look gorgeous with a diamante collar? Rosiero, euwww! Thanks for that thought and I will be very careful!! VILF, there, there! Maybe you're ready for another bunny? MsCatcalls, that's terrible, I'll be over right away to join in the search, and Hadriana, darling, I'm very familiar with angst but that's the only German I know!

BTW Watch out for fleas DD , we seem to have them , I'm not into casting aspersions but apparently they can come from bunnies just as much as from cats and dogs .... we may have to call out Pest Control ....yuk .

Hi, new to all this. I just thought that rabbit looked so beautiful. Reminded me of when i was a child and we kept 23 rabbits. No, this is not a mis-print. All the best

My goodness, Mum50, 23 rabbits? There must have been no blade of grass unnibbled in your childhood garden. Ms Catcalls, sorry to hear about your, ahem, ticklish problem, hope things are under control! Tarte Tartan, you are marvellous, I shall paste it up forthwith x
